About:

The Gandhi Ashram Ahmedabad is situated on the banks of the Sabarmati River. It used to the nerve center for the Indian Freedom movement. During the lifetime of Mahatma Gandhi, the Gandhi Ashram In Ahmedabad India was known as Satyagraha Ashram and is now, one of the most significant monuments in Ahmedabad.
On a quiet stretch of the Sabarmati river lies the Gandhi Ashram, established in 1920. During the lifetime of Mahatma Gandhi it was known as Satyagraha Ashram and was the centre of the struggle for Independence. It was from here, in 1930, that the Mahatma started on his famous "Dandi March" to the sea to protest against the Salt Tax imposed by the British. 'Hridaya Kunj', the simple cottage where he lived, is preserved as a National Monument. A Gandhi Memorial Centre, a Library and a Sound-and-Light show offer indepth insight into the Mahatma's life and work.
The Gandhi Ashram in Gandhinagar was established in the year 1920. It includes a library and a Gandhi Memorial Center. The peaceful environment of the ashram will draw you towards the ideals of the great hero of India’s freedom movement. During the Gandhian era, the ashram was known as the Satyagraha Ashram and has been a major center during the struggle for Independence movements.
The famous “Dandi March” triggered off from Gandhi Ashram, Gandhinagar. The ‘Hridaya Kunj’ which is now preserved as a National Monument is a simply built cottage where Gandhiji lived. The best part of a tour to Gandhi Ashram, Gujarat is the light and sound show which attracts a large number of spectators.

The weather is March to June when the maximum temperature of 36 °C and 42 °C, and the minimum of 19 °C and 27 °C. From November to February, the maximum temperature is around 29 °C, the average minimum is 14 °C.

History:

After his return from South Africa, Gandhiji decided to settle in Ahmedabad. It was for four reasons that he selected this place as the venue for his ashram- In his own words "being a Gujarati, I'll serve my country best through the use of Gujarati language. As Ahmedabad was the centre of handloom in early days, the work of spinning wheel (charkha) could be done in a better way, I believed. Being the capital of Gujarat its wealthy persons will also make larger contribution, I hoped."
And in none of this he was disappointed during his sixteen years stay in Ahmedabad. His first ashram was set up at Kochrab near Paldi of the present day Ahmedabad, which was a bungalow of his barrister friend Jivanlal Desai. However, this place had to be abandoned after two years in the wake of a plague epidemic.

Akshardham Temple:
The Akshardam temple is one of the famous temple in Gandhinagar. This temple belongs to the wealthy Hindu Swaminarayan Group, the richest sect in the world. This temple was built by nearly 1000 artisans. It is an elaborately carved building constructed out of 6000 tonnes of pink sandstone with beautiful carvings and surrounded by the manicured lawns, perfect trees and admirable fountains. In September 2002, this temple was attacked by the terrorists.
The Swaminarayan Temple at Gandhinagar in Gujarat in India is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan. The temple is a beautiful edifice made out of pink stone. The temple is fully made up of stone. The Swaminarayan temple was opened to the public in the year 1992 and thousands of tourists flock in everyday to visit the temple. In the central hall of the temple, the idol of Lord Swaminarayan is set. The idol is fully covered with a gold leaf. The central hall also has idols of the successors of Lord Swaminarayan. These idols are marble idol and add beauty to the hall ambience. The temple looks grand with 100 pillars which are beautifully sculptured, the balconies are beautifully decorated, there is a podium and seventeen domes. There are two hundred windows in the whole edifice.
Craftsmen's Village:
Located near Gandhinagar, on the Sabarmati river back, is Pethapur village, only 7 kms from the capital. Once famous for its colourful `Bandhani' saris, the village also used to export wooden printing blocks to Singapore. The wooden blocks, with exquisite patterns carved on them, are used for the hand-printing of cloth. They are still in demand among the people. Some of the printing centres in India are Ahmedabad, Bombay, Jetpur and Rajkot. The Pethapur craftsmen are mainly Gujjar Suthars.
Adalaj Step Well:
Adalaj Step Well, the architectural marvel, is situated about 15 kms from the capital on the National Highway. This well is famous for its unique architecture with a huge artistic edifice and a flight of steps that enables one to reach the water, whatever be its level. The Adalaj Step Well is considered to be the best of all step wells in Gujarat.

Hanumanji Temple:
Hanumanji Temple in Gandhinagar is visited by thousands of devotee everyday. The idol of Lord Hanuman in the Hanumanji Temple of Gandhinagar is seen bearing a mountain on his shoulder. The idol is saffron in color. As per the Indian mythologies and tradition it is said that regular visitors to the temple gains special favor of Lord Hanuman. The temple is visited by thousands of visitors every Tuesday and Saturday. As per the Vedas, Hanuman protects human beings from the wrath of the planet Saturn. Sarkhej:
Sarkhej is situated about 8 kms. southwest of the city centre and a suburb of Ahmedabad. Sarkhej was once a country retreat of the Muslim rulers. It is known for its Rauza, the fine architectural complex of mosques, palaces, pavilions and tombs, all grouped around a stepped tank. The style shows distinct Hindu influence. By the entrance is the tomb of Sultan Mahmud Begadaa, with geometric jalis casting patterns of light on the floor. Shaikh Ahmed Khattu lived at Sarkhej and built this mosque with a great open space in front of the prayer hall, surrounded by the domes. The Dutch established an indigo factory nearby.

Vishala:
Vishala is situated about 5 kms. from Ahmedabad. It is purposefully built showpiece of a collection of huts along clay paths which capture the spirit of a traditional Gujarati village. It began as an excellent vegetarian restaurant in 1978 but has grown since to include a museum, live performances of music, dance and puppet shows as well as craftsman at work and an excellent shop. Pots, handloom linens, hand crafted shoes, clothes, brassware or embroidery from Vishala. Here you can sit cross-legged at low tables, eat on green leaves and drink from clay tumblers. The portions are generous and there is a large variety of traditional dishes, breads, chutneys, ending with an Indian sweet and nutty ice-cream.
Utensils Museum:
The Utensils Museum has an exceptional collection of rare brass and copper utensils, water pots, old betel nut boxes and containers used for temple rituals.
Adalaj:
Adalaj is situated about 17 kms. north of Ahmedabad. The baoli or step-well at Adalaj Vav is one of the finest step well in India. Queen Rudabai built this well in 1499 to provide the traveller with a cool and pleasant refuge from the summer heat. A long flight of steps descends to the water. It has three entrances leading to a huge platform that rests on 16 pillars, with corners marked by shrines. Ornately carved pillars and cross beams create open spaces and four storey that are quite striking. The octagonal well is five storey deep. The baoli is decorated with exquisite stone carvings, subjects range from eroticism to buttermilk.
Dada Hari Vav:
Dada Hari Vav was built in 1499 by a woman of Sultan Begara's harem. This wav has steps to lower platforms, terminating at a small, octagonal well. The depths are cool, even on a hottest day. Neglected and often borne dry, it is a fascinating place. The best time to visit and photograph the well is between 10 to 11 AM (earlier in the summers Adalaj Vav, Ahmedabad and later in the winters), at other times the sun does not penetrate to the various levels.
Gujarat Science City:
The Gujarat Science City is an educational theme park situated on the road to Gandhinagar. The features of this science city are an IMAX theatre, the interactive Hall of Science, a 30 seater Thrill Ride Simulator, a spot lit Musical fountain and an Energy Education Park.
Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary:
Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary is situated about 60 kms. south west of Ahmedabad. Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary is the famous bird sanctuary in Gujarat. The Nalsarovar lake is a seasonal lake spread over an area of 115 square km. This extensive lake is surrounded by the iron flat plains and is known for its water birds. About thousand species of birds like flamingoes and other water birds migrate in the Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary during winter. Various variety of birds like kingfishers, egrets, darters, storks, cormorants, jacanas, moorhens, coots, grebes and ducks can be seen in this sanctuary. The best time to visit this sanctuary is in the months of December and January.
Jama Masjid:
Jama MasjidOne of masterpieces of India’s architectural wonders the Jama Masjid is one of the most beautiful mosques in the western India . Built during the period of Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1423 the mosque combines both the Hindu Muslim style of architecture in a harmonious way. This fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture of the Ahmed Shahi style was built over a period of 13 years. Built in yellow sandstone standing on 260 pillars supporting 15 domes at varying elevations it gives a majestic look to the onlookers as well as the surrounding around.

But after the Qutab Minar tragedy during which many were crushed in a stampede while climbing on its narrow steps, climbing up the Minaret to feel the 'shaking' has been barred by the authorities to avoid any such tragedies.

It is believed that in this township, where Lord Ram performed a Yajna [sacrifice]of sanctification for the sins of having killed Ravana, the king of Lanka.this city of temple is located on the banks of the Pushpavathi River,in Mehsana district and the people worship Lord Surya as this main deity. The main attraction here is the Sun temple which built in the pattern of solanki architecture and it dates to the 11th century during the rule of king Bhimdev 1 of Patan. Taranga Hills:
The hill region is thronged three peaks around and Taranga is near to the Jain Temple of Idol which is said to be the Jain Siddha Kshetra. These hills have 5 Digambar and 5 Shwetambar temples and it is said that several saints have obtained final emancipation after powerful austerities from here. The beautiful temple of Lord Ajitnath is located here, this was constructed during the 12th century by the Shwetambar Solanki king, Kumarapal of Patan.
Thol wildlife sanctuary:
The circumference of this jungle is 7sq. km and it is a home of nature and beauty filled in with variety of wildfowl, flamingos, gray pelicans, black ibis and wetland birds. The best seasons are the month of October to March.
